The Harry Potter books and movies have taken the world by storm. Very few books have been as popular as these around the world, and for good reason. The world of the Harry Potter costumes, books and movies is a fantastical one, awakening the imaginations of young and old alike.
The World
The Harry Potter world is one in which witches, wizards and other magical folk and creatures exist, hidden from the average everyday world. In the Harry Potter world, an entire society of wizards exists, unknown to everyone else. In this world there are schools for young witches and wizards to learn how to use magic.
One of these such schools is Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It is here that Harry Potter learns to use magic and has his adventures.
The Characters
- There are literally dozens of interesting characters in the Harry Potter books and movies. Some of the most notable ones include:
- Harry Potter, the protagonist. Harry is a young boy who is taken from his horrible living conditions with his mean aunt and uncle and thrust into the amazing adventures and drama of the wizarding world.
- Albus Dumbledore. Professor Dumbledore is the headmaster of Hogwarts and Harry’s mentor.
- Severus Snape. Snape is the Potions Master at Hogwarts, and former servant of Lord Voldemort.
- The Weasley Family. Ron Weasley is Harry Potter’s best friend. Ron’s sister Ginny becomes Harry’s love interest later in the series, and Mr. and Mrs. Weasley play prominent roles, as do brothers Fred, George, Bill and Percy.
- The Dursleys. Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia and Dudley are Harry’s family, who continually mistreat Harry.
- Hermione Granger. Hermione is a muggle-born witch, student at Hogwarts and friend of Harry and Ron.
- The Order of the Phoenix. Harry’s godfather Sirius Black, as well as interesting characters like the werewolf Remus Lupin and the auror Mad Eye Moody are part of the Order, the organization that has struggled against the Dark Lord for decades.
- Lord Voldemort. Once a student at Hogwarts, Tom Riddle became the evil Lord Voldemort. The Harry Potter books and movies tell the tale of his return to power.
- The Malfoys. Draco Malfoy is a young student at Hogwarts and Harry’s nemesis. His father Lucius is a death eater, and servant of Lord Voldemort.
The Books and Movies
- There are seven books in the Harry Potter series. Each one tells the tale of Harry’s adventures, and the first six have already been made into movies:
- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone tells the tale of Lord Voldemort’ attempt to possess everlasting life through the Sorcerer’s Stone.
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets tells of the discovery of the horrible Chamber of Secrets at Hogwarts and the horrific evil contained therein.
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban introduces Harry’s godfather Sirius Black, as well as many other characters.
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire covers the Tri-Wizard tournament between Hogwarts and two other wizarding schools.
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix chronicles the struggle of the Order against Lord Voldemort.
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince tells of Voldemort’s rise to power and his defeat of Albus Dumbledore.
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows concludes the series, bringing closure to the events of the books and movies. It is expected that this book will actually be made into two movies, released in 2010 and 2011 respectively
